HaCon visualises the real-time positions of all trains of the Munich S-Bahn
At the end of July, S-Bahn München embarked on new innovations in passenger information. A new application displays a map showing the current position of the S-Bahn trains. This information is updated every five seconds. The information required for the display is based on train number-related real-time data provided by S-Bahn München. Delays are identified by making comparisons with the scheduled train position. The actual position of trains is determined at the signal locations and extrapolated between the signal locations.
The Bayerische Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft (BEG) is providing financial support to the project, enabling it to be implemented. The comparison of the scheduled position of the train against its actual position provides the data for determining if a train in the S-Bahn network is travelling on time or if there is a delay, and if so by how many minutes. To display the positions of the trains on the map, the position reports of the trains are recorded at selected signal locations and extrapolated to the next signal location. Therefore this is currently not a GPS location system.
The project is in its pilot phase. “In the spring of 2012 we are planning to use an optimised data source in order to achieve even better data quality for on-time and delayed services“, says Frank Hole, Head of Marketing and Sales for S-Bahn München.
Alongside the internet solution, a mobile version is also available for iPhones and Android smartphones.
